Course Description:
Exploration from a philosophical perspective (and from some religious and literary perspectives) of the concepts of forgiveness and mercy—what do these concepts mean and to what degree are they moral or religious virtues?—and an exploration of the degree to which, if at all, these virtues are compatible with criminal punishment. I have thought and written a great deal (some would say too much) about punishment, forgiveness, and mercy, and I had thought that I was out of gas on these topics and had nothing left to say about them. Many fine books and essays have appeared since my last publications on these topics, however, and they have stimulated me to see some things I had not seen before and to rethink some of my earlier views. I will a bit later provide a list of books to be used in the seminar. Someone who wants to get an introduction prior to the start of the seminar to my approach to these issues should read my book (mercifully brief) GETTING EVEN--FORGIVENESS AND ITS LIMITS. More later.
