Course Description:
This course examines the fundamentals of pursuing or defending a civil (as opposed to a criminal) lawsuit. More than any other foundational law school course, civil procedure introduces you to what it means to be a member of the legal profession. You will learn what comprises a lawyer’s “toolkit.” What should a lawyer consider before accepting a case? How do lawyers frame their cases in order to present them in a court? How does a case proceed from start to finish? What gives a court the power to resolve particular types of cases and particular claims? What determines where in a court system a case will be heard? By the end of the course you should have answers to these questions.
