Course Description:
This first half of this course will address the substantive and procedural aspects of international criminal law as a prerequisite to building a war crimes prosecution. Substantive-law topics include genocide, the crime of aggression, crimes against humanity and war crimes. Procedural topics include the law of evidence, mutual legal assistance, and the jurisdiction and structure of the international criminal tribunals. The second half of this course will survey requisite skills in the building of a prosecution case with particular attention to contemporary methods and practical skills. These include Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT), witness interviews, documentation archives and modern methods of evidentiary analysis such as relational databases as used by international prosecutors. The course will finish with a discussion of artificial intelligence and its impact on the investigation and prosecution of international crimes.
