Course Description:
This spring break course will be held in Hawaii at various offices, NGOs/non-profits, and other venues as needed.

Class will meet Monday, March 10 through Friday, March 14, 2025, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. Afternoons are optional activities. One class period will be devoted to a class service project. Prior to the scheduled trip, the course will meet for two-three hours to cover baseline materials and course pre-reads. This time will be set up with feedback from the students.

Enrollment priority will be given to 3L students seeking the Indian Law Certificate, but enrollment may be open to other students depending on resources and logistics. Federal Indian Law I is a pre-requisite.

Course Description:

The class will expose students to the legal and political issues and experiences relating to Native Hawaiian individuals and entities. This is an area of Indigenous Law and Policy in the United States often marginalized in courses, texts, and intellectual discourse.

Subject matter coverage will focus on current events, legal and political issues in Native Hawaiian and Indigenous Law with a particular focus on land and natural resources, the role of business entities and nonprofits in Indigenous autonomy, and various approaches to governance, economic development, and cultural resilience.

The course will address practical, legal and economic challenges and solutions for Native Hawaiians and their communities and convey core competencies required of lawyers and policy makers working in this space.
