Course Description:
This class will meet for 6 weeks beginning Wednesday, January 12 through Wednesday, February 16.
A Take-Home exam will be administered the week of February 21.
This class will introduce students to the federal
laws, regulations, and guidance that have been enacted
to combat fraud and abuse in federal health care
programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. The topics to
be covered include an overview of Medicare, an
introduction to the primary civil and criminal fraud
statutes, such as the False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback
Statute, the Stark Law, fraud and abuse
investigations, initiatives, enforcement and
prosecution by the government against health care
providers, the impact and implications of Qui tam
actions, the fraud and abuse provisions contained in
recent health care reform legislation (Patient
Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010), self-
disclosure protocols, and practical considerations for
defending health care fraud and abuse investigations
and cases.
