The International Law Commission was established by the General Assembly, in 1947, to undertake the mandate of the Assembly, under article 13 (1) (a) of the Charter of the United Nations to "initiate studies and make recommendations for the purpose of ... encouraging the progressive development of international law and its codification".

In accordance with resolution 78/108 of 7 December 2023, the International Law Commission was scheduled to hold its seventy-fifth session at the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG) from 15 April to 31 May and from 1 July to 2 August 2024 (12 weeks). However, in light of the ongoing financial crisis, the session will now be held from 29 April to 31 May and from 1 July to 2 August 2024 (10 weeks), in conference room XXI.

24 May 2024 A commemorative event to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Commission at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, on 24 May 2024, from 13:30 to 18:30.

21 May 2024 The Special Rapporteur, Mr. Yacouba Cissé, introduced his second report on the topic (A/CN.4/770). The Commission began its consideration of the Special Rapporteur’s second report.

Settlement of disputes

17 May 2024 The document containing titles of Part One and Part Two, and texts and titles of draft guidelines 3, 4 and 5 as provisionally adopted by the Drafting Committee, has been issued (A/CN.4/L.998).

15 May 2024 The Special Rapporteur summed up the debate on his second report (A/CN.4/769). The Commission decided to refer draft conclusions 6, 7 and 8 to the Drafting Committee.

9 May 2024 The Special Rapporteur, Mr. Charles Chernor Jalloh, introduced his second report on the topic (A/CN.4/769). The Commission began its consideration of the Special Rapporteur’s second report.

3 May 2024 The Special Rapporteur summed up the debate on his second report (A/CN.4/766). The Commission referred draft guidelines 3 to 6 as recommended by the Special Rapporteur to the Drafting Committee.

Subsidiary means

2 May 2024 The Commission adopted the titles and texts of the draft conclusions 4 and 5 (A/CN.4/L.985/Add.1), which were taken note of at last year’s session by the Commission, as orally revised.

Filling of a casual vacancy

1 May 2024 The Commission elected Ms. Alina Orosan (Romania) to fill the casual vacancy arising from the resignation of Mr. Bogdan Aurescu (Romania).
