Sandra L. Shire is a clinical associate professor in College of Nursing and Health Innovation and member of Barrett, The Honors College faculty. She is a dentist by training. She's practiced in public health settings in her career as a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service. While in the service, she was employed for more than 15 years at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration where she worked first as a scientific reviewer of medical devices and then as a lead investigator for the Agency’s Bioresearch Monitoring program, reviewing clinical trials. Professor Shire conducted international inspections which resulted in a number of regulatory actions, resulting in criminal and civil penalties. For a number of years, she has worked as a consultant and trainer for private industry and has been a presenter and keynote speaker at national conferences. She joined the ASU faculty in 2010. She received The Surgeon General's Exemplary Service Medal in 1997.
