Abstract
This paper was delivered at a symposium on religion and law addressing religion and the conventional first year curriculum: property, crimes, torts, procedure, contract. This paper outlines the Jewish law of torts and then reflects on the question of the relationship between law and religion posed by the integration of that law into the modern state of Israel. A review of that ongoing interpretation in the modern state of Israel should be useful in confronting the numerous problems, legal and theological, that arise when the secular purposefully encounters the religious.
