Abstract

This article is the fifth consecutive annual review of the published opinions of the Arizona Supreme Court. The period under study in this review covers decisions rendered from August 1, 2001 to July 31, 2002. In this period under review, the Arizona Supreme Court developed the jurisprudence of the state in constitutional, statutory, and common law areas of law. Election law cases continue to hold the court's attention, with four important rulings. In addition, the supreme court decided eight death penalty cases (of special moment given the decision of the United States Supreme Court in Ring v. Arizona overturning the sentencing provisions of Arizona's death penalty statute) and explored a wide range of other matters. Extensive substantive treatment of all of the decisions is provided in this annual review by student-authored works. Preceding the analytical treatment of the court decisions, a summary statistical analysis of the past year is also provided, with comparative observations to the five year period of these annual reviews.
