Course Description:
WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE? Students interested in preparing for the globalization of law in the next generation, and professional life under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This Seminar will guide students through the trilateral, multisectoral trade agreement that is the centerpiece for US regional integration in the Americas.

SEMINAR DESCRIPTION: As the gateway to Mexico and the Americas and located on the CANAMEX trade corridor, Arizona lawyers confront NAFTA-related issues on a regular basis. This seminar will prepare students to spot and navigate NAFTA-related trade, environmental and labor issues. Topics include: the Canadian Free Trade Agreement, tariffs, rules of origin, nontariff barriers, legal services, trucking and buses, financial services, investor rights, obligations and remedies, intellectual property, trade secrets, patents, dispute settlement panels including antidumping and countervailing duty panels, and the environmental and labor side agreements.

Each student will write a paper for his/her seminar credit, on a topic of NAFTA Law to be agreed upon with the instructor. Virtually any area of law that interests the individual student is appropriate.
