Course Description:
This course explores U.S. Asylum Law and the overall phenomenon of forced migration to the United States. The primary focus is INA 208, which controls the eligibility for Refugee status in the United States. Students learn statutory analysis, administrative procedures, and the asylum process. Topics of discussion include grounds of eligibility, statutory definitions, group persecution, fact- finding/evidentiary challenges, bars to asylum, and application procedures. Course is only offered every other year. Outstanding students may be invited to work on a Board of Immigration Appeals brief the following semester for independent credit.
