Course Description:
This course will focus on a rigorous review of the basic print and electronic resources and strategies for conducting legal research, federal and state. Case law, statutes and legislative history, administrative rules and procedures and finding tools will all be covered. This course is labor intensive. The best way to learn to conduct effective legal research is to use the full range of tools available and then practice, practice, practice! Students will be in class two hours per week. Students will have frequent practice exercises, a midterm exam, and a final exam on the last day of class. Students taking the class for 2 credits will be eligible for the skills requirement.

If students wish a third hour, apply for independent study with the instructor. The paper will be a research guide and will allow students to further apply their knowledge of legal research by discovering and evaluating information resources on a preapproved specialized topic of their choice. If this option is chosen, the final exam is not required. Students taking the class for 3 credits will be eligible for both the skills requirement and the flexible writing requirement.
