American Indian Law Deskbook
(1129Hits) The American Indian Law Deskbook is a comprehensive treatise on Indian law, presented from the perspective of state officials. It is updated annually through a stand-alone supplement. The Deskbook examines the legal structure governing the relationships among Native Americans and the federal and state governments. It includes discussions on the evolution of federal statutory Indian law, the judicial foundations of federal Indian policy, the parameters of criminal jurisdiction in Indian Country, tribal sovereignty and jurisdiction relating to tribal courts, fishing and wildlife, environmental regulation, water rights, gaming, and child welfare, and the approaches used by states and tribes for resolving jurisdictional disputes. The Deskbook also contains a table of Indian law court decisions, a table of statutes and codes relating to Native Americans, and an extensive bibliography.

It specifically holds information about American Indians who maintained their ties to a federally recognized tribe. To effectively conduct genealogical searches, it is recommended that the researcher know the name of the individual, name of the tribe, and approximately where and when the person lived.
