Paul J. Ward has served as General Counsel of Arizona State University since 1991 and its Vice President and General Counsel since 2000. Prior to his association with ASU, he served as General Counsel to the University of South Carolina System (1979-91). Previous to this time, he was engaged in the private practice of law in Washington, D.C. with the firm Casey, Lane & Mittendorf.
Mr. Ward served as President of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) 1996-97 and on its Board of Directors from 1988-92 and 1993-98. In 1993, he established NACUA’s electronic bulletin board, NACUANET, which now has more than 1,500 participating members in the United States and Canada. In June 2000, he received the Distinguished Service Award from NACUA. He is a founding member of the NCAA General Counsel Advisory Board (2000-present) and also serves on the Arizona Corporate Counsel Forum. He chairs the ASU Institutional Athletics Compliance Team and is a member of the ASU Professional Sports Counseling Panel. In addition, he recently concluded a term in the American Bar Association House of Delegates (2000-02). He has taught graduate courses in Higher Education Law and Administrative Law as well undergraduate courses in Business Law and the Freshman Year Experience. Mr. Ward received his B.A. and M.A. from Eastern Illinois University and his J.D. from Southern Methodist University School of Law. He has been admitted to practice law in Arizona, South Carolina, Texas, Indiana, and the District of Columbia.
